For a cold, I will always swear by hot and sour soup. All the value of chicken soup, plus enough spiciness to clear out sinuses. I got my recipe from epicurious.com. It's the only one on the site for it so it'll be easy to find. I just omit the dried mushrooms, and use ramen noodles (not the seasoning packet) in place of the rice(?) noodles it calls for. And sorry, I don't know about the second question.
