What kind of SUV is pretty good on gas?

I'm starting college in a month so I'm looking for a car to get back in forth. I need something that is good on gas so I can drive back and forth from school 3 days a week, but, I also live in PA so the winters get pretty harsh and I'd feel alot safer in an SUV with 4 wheel drive rather then a little car and front wheel drive. So if you could recommend a few vehicles that get good gas mileage and can handle the snowy PA roads it would be very much appreciated because I am so lost when it comes too cars.
