Does it look bad to go over the word limit for the Personal Statement essay on the common application?

The common application says to write a 250-500 word essay. My essay however is 750 words and I really think that in order to keep the quality of the essay, it has to be that long. Will I be penalized for keeping my essay over the suggested word limit or does it not matter to college admissions people?
