Can you melt clear PVC piping and connect another piece on to it and let it cool so its one piece (air-tight)?

I am making something and instead of connecting the clear PVC piping with a connector and PVC cement or any other adhesive, I wanted to like use something to heat the rim of the clear PVC piping so its melted and connect another piece on to it and let it cool so it becomes one and airtight. Is this possible? What should I use ....like a torch or sumtin?
